What is a total or Over/Under wager? (US)

A wager on the Total or the Over/Under of a game is a wager on the number of points, runs, or goals in a game. The sportsbook will set a line, and the bet will be on whether the game total will be Over or Under the line.  Totals are available on a wide range of team or player statistics.

With this type of bet, you have two options. Once the oddsmaker at the Sportsbook sets the line, you can bet that the total score of the game/match will go either over the line or under it.

Example 1:

A screenshot of a DraftKings webpage displaying odds for a baseball game between the Minnesota Twins and Baltimore Orioles. Betting options are displayed in three columns: Run Line, Total, and Moneyline. The Total column shows over/under options, with O -118 and U -102 circled in red.

In this case the Over/Under total for the game is set to 9. If the combined total points at the end of the game is exactly 9, the bet is a push and your wager will be refunded.

If you're an over bettor, you'll win if the combined total points at the end of the game are over 9, while if you're an under bettor, you'll win if the combined total points are under 9.

Example 2:

In this case the Over/Under total for the game is set to 7.5. If you're an over bettor, you'll win if the combined total points at the end of the game is 8 or more, while if you're an under bettor, you'll win if the combined total points is 7 or less.
